Oscillations - Result Question 1

1. The phase difference between displacement and acceleration of a particle in a simple harmonic motion is :

[2020]

(a) 3π2rad

(b) π2rad

(c) zero

(d) πrad

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (d) Displacement equation of a SHM

y=Asin(ωt+ϕ)

Velocity, v=dydt=Aωcos(ωt+ϕ)

Acceleration, a=dvdt

 or, a=Aω2sin(ωt+ϕ)

a=Aω2sin(ωt+ϕ+π)

Hence, phase difference between displacement and acceleration is π.

2 .

(d) Att =0,y=3, which is maximum displacement so equation will be cosine function.

ω=2πT=2π4=π2rad/s(T=4s)y=acosωty=3cosπ2t
