Solution:

(a) Velocity of swimmer w.r.t. river $V_{S R} = 20 m / s$ Velocity of river w.r.t. ground $V_{R G} = 10 m / s$

${\vec{V}}_{S G} = {\vec{V}}_{S R} + {\vec{V}}_{R G}$

$\sin θ = | \frac{{\vec{V}}_{R G}}{{\vec{V}}_{S R}} | \Rightarrow \sin θ = \frac{10}{20}$

$\Rightarrow \sin θ = \frac{1}{2} ∴ θ = 30^{\circ}$ west

i.e.,to cross the river along the shortest path, swimmer should make his strokes $30^{\circ}$ west.
