Coordination Compounds 2 Question 43

####45. The geometry of Ni(CO)4 and Ni(PPh3)2Cl2 are (1999,2M)

(a) both square planar

(b) tetrahedral and square planar, respectively

(c) both tetrahedral

(d) square planar and tetrahedral, respectively

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. In Ni(CO)4,Ni is in 3d10 state due to strong ligand field produced by CO. Hence, Ni is sp3-hybridised and complex is tetrahedral. In NiCl2(PPh3)2,Ni2+ has 3d8-configuration. Due to weak ligand field, Ni is sp3-hybridised and complex is tetrahedral.
