Coordination Compounds 2 Question 43
####45. The geometry of $Ni(CO) _4$ and $Ni\left(PPh _3\right) _2 Cl _2$ are $(1999,2 M)$
(a) both square planar
(b) tetrahedral and square planar, respectively
(c) both tetrahedral
(d) square planar and tetrahedral, respectively
Show Answer
Solution:
- In $Ni(CO) _4, Ni$ is in $3 d^{10}$ state due to strong ligand field produced by $CO$. Hence, $Ni$ is $s p^{3}$-hybridised and complex is tetrahedral. In $NiCl _2\left(PPh _3\right) _2, Ni^{2+}$ has $3 d^{8}$-configuration. Due to weak ligand field, $Ni$ is $s p^{3}$-hybridised and complex is tetrahedral.
