current-electricity Question 17

Question: Q. 4. Two metallic wires P1 and P2 of the same material and same length but different cross-sectional areas A1 and A2 are joined together and then connected to a source of emf. Find the ratio of the drift velocities of free electrons in the wires P1 and P2, if the wires are connected (i) in series, and (ii) in parallel.

Solution:

Ans. Ratio of drift velocities in series 1

Ratio of drift velocities in parallel

In series, the current remains the same

I=neA1vd1=neA2vd2 vd1vd2=A2A1

In parallel potential difference is same but currents are different.

I1R1=I2R2 vd1vd2=1

V=I1R1 =neA1vd1ρlA1 =neρvd1l V=I2R2=neρvd2l R1=I2R2 1112=1
