Question-

Directions : Read the following paragraph carefully and answer the questions given below:

A construction concern has given the details about the number of days taken by five different workers $P, M, V, S$ and $T$ to complete two different works (Work 1 and Work 2). Work 1 is completed by P, M, V, S and T in 7 days, 8 days, 6 days, 5 days and 10 days respectively. Work 2 is completed by $P, M, V, S$ and $T$ in 5 days, 6 days, 8 days, 7 days and 5 days respectively.

When 10 hours is taken per day, what is the approximate difference between number of hours taken to complete work 1 and 2 by $P, S$ and $T$ working together?

(1) 3 hours

(2) 5 hours

(3) 6 hours

(4) 7 hours

(5) 4 hours

Show Answer

Answer: (2)

Solution: (2)

For work 1,

Time taken by P, S and T

$=1 \div\left(\frac{1}{7}+\frac{1}{5}+\frac{1}{10}\right)$ $=1 \div\left(\frac{10+14+7}{70}\right)$

$=1 \div \frac{31}{70}=\frac{70}{31}=2.3$ days

$=23$ hours

For work 2,

Time taken $=1 \div\left(\frac{1}{5}+\frac{1}{7}+\frac{1}{5}\right)$

$=1 \div\left(\frac{7+5+7}{35}\right)=1 \div \frac{19}{35}$

$=\frac{35}{19}$

$=1.8$ days $=18$ hours

Required difference $=23-18=5$ hours
