In state $R$ female population above poverty line is by what per cent more than that below poverty line?

(1) 185

(2) 85

(3) 105

(4) 160

(5) 125

Correct Answer: (1)

Solution: (1)

Total population of state $R$ $= x$ millions

Population below poverty line $= \frac{24 x}{100}$ millions

Females $= \frac{2}{3} \times \frac{24 x}{100}$ millions $= \frac{4 x}{25}$ millions

Population above poverty line $= \frac{76 x}{100} = \frac{19 x}{25}$ millions

Females $= \frac{3}{5} \times \frac{19 x}{25}$ $= \frac{57 x}{125}$ millions

Difference $= \frac{57 x}{125} - \frac{4 x}{25}$ $= \frac{57 x - 20 x}{125} = \frac{37 x}{125}$ millions

$∴$ Required per cent $= \frac{\frac{37 x}{125}}{\frac{4 x}{25}} \times 100$ $= \frac{37 x}{125} \times \frac{25}{4 x} \times 100 = 185 %$
