Solution:

$I = a_{1}^{2} + a_{2}^{2} + 2 a_{1} a_{2} \cos φ$

Put $a_{1}^{2} + a_{2}^{2} = A$

and $a_{1} a_{2} = B; ∴ I = A + B \cos φ$
