Introduction To Thermodynamics - First Law And Internal Energy

Detailed notes prepared by toppers as a comprehensive resource for the JEE exam

1. Thermodynamic Systems

Concepts:

  • Definition: A thermodynamic system is a part of the universe whose boundaries are identified for an analysis involving matter or energy transfer.

-Classification Of Systems

**Thermodynamic System Properties**
  • Open System: -Matter and energy exchange.

-* Closed System:

  • Energy exchange - not matter.
  • Isolated System: Neither energy nor matter exchange.

-State Variables:

_Physical quantities whose values define the present state of the systems are called *State Variables*_.
  • Some state variables P, V, and T completely define the condition of the closed or isolated systems and are sufficient to know its past & future. State variables are independent of path.

Note: An Open system is never used because they are so unpredictable.
