NEET Solved Paper 2014 Question 26
Question: The reaction of aqueous $ KMnO _4 $ with $ H _2O _2 $ in acidic conditions gives [AIPMT 2014]
Options:
A) $ M{n^{4+}} $ and $ O _2 $
B) $ M{n^{2+}} $ and $ O _2 $
C) $ M{n^{2+}} $ and $ O _3 $
D) $ M{n^{4+}} $ and $ MnO _2 $
Show Answer
Answer:
Correct Answer: B
Solution:
The reaction of aqueous $ KMnO _4 $ with $ H _2O _2 $ in acidic medium is
$ 3H _2SO _4+2KMnO _4+5H _2O _2\to $ $ 5O _2+2MnSO _4+8H _2O+K _2SO _4 $
In the above reaction, $ KMnO _4 $ oxidises $ H _2O _2 $ to $ O _2 $ and itself $ [MnO_4^{-}] $ gets reduced to $ M{n^{2+}} $ ion as $ MnSO _4 $ .
Hence, aqueous solution of $ KMnO _4 $ with $ H _2O _2 $ yields $ M{n^{2+}} $ and $ O _2 $ in acidic conditions.
