Ray Optics and Optical Instruments - Result Question 16

16. An air bubble in a glass slab (μ=1.5) is 5cm deep when viewed from one face and 2cm deep when viewed from the opposite face. The thickness of the slab is

(a) 7.5cm

(b) 10.5cm

(c) 7cm

(d) 10cm

Answer:

Correct Answer: 16. (b)

Solution:

(b) 1.5= Real depth (R1) Apparent depth (5cm)

R1=1.5×5=7.5cm

For opposite face,

1.5=R22R2=3.0cm

Thickness of the slab =R1+R2

=7.5+3=10.5cm

If object and observer are situated in different medium then due to refraction, object appears to be displaced

Refractive index, μ= Real depth (h)Apparentdepth(h)

Real depth > Apparent depth

In case object is in rarer medium and object is in denser medium then, μ=hh

Real depth < apparent depth
