Current Electricity - Result Question 78

83. If 25W,220V and 100W,220V bulbs are connected in series across a 440V line, then

[2001]

(a) only 25W bulb will fuse

(b) only 100W bulb will fuse

(c) both bulbs will fuse

(d) none of these

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 83. (a)

Solution:

  1. (a) As for an electric appliance R=(Vs2/W), so for same specified voltage Vs

R25R100=10025=4

i.e, R25=4R with R100=R

Now in series potential divides in proportion to resistance. So, V1=R1(R1+R2)V

i.e., V25=45×440=352V

and V2=R2(R1+R2)V

i.e., V100=15×440=88V

From this, it is clear that voltage across 100W bulb (=88V) is lesser than specified (220V) while across 25W bulb (=352V) is greater than specified (220V), so, 25W bulb will fuse.
