The pBlock Elements - Result Question 23
####24. Which one of the following statements about the zeolites is false?
[2004]
(a) They are used as cation exchangers
(b) They have open structure which enables them to take up small molecules (c) Zeolites are aluminosilicates having three dimensional network
(d) Some of the $SiO_4^{4-}$ units are replaced by $AlO_4^{5-}$ and $AlO_6^{9-}$ ions in zeolites
Show Answer
Solution:
- (c) Zeolites are crystaline solid structures made up of silicon, aluminium and oxygen making a framework with cavities.
Zeolites have $SiO_4^{4-}$ and $AlO_4^{5-}$ tetrahedrons linked together in a 3-D open structure in which 4 or 6 membered rings predominate. Due to open structure they have cavities and can take up water and other small molecules.
