The P Block Elements - Result Question 7
####7. Strong reducing behaviour of $H_3 PO_2$ is due to [2015 RS]
(a) presence of one $-OH$ group and two $P-H$ bonds
(b) high electron gain enthalpy of phosphorus
(c) high oxidation state of phosphorus
(d) presence oftwo-OH groups and one $P-H$ bond.
Show Answer
Solution:
- (a) The acids which contain $P-H$ bond have strong reducing properties.
$H_3 PO_2$ acid is good reducing agent as it contains two P-H bonds and reduces, for example, $AgNO_3$ to metallic silver.
$ \begin{aligned} 4 AgNO_3+2 H_2 O+ & H_3 PO_2 \longrightarrow \\ & 4 Ag+4 HNO_3+H_3 PO_4 \end{aligned} $
