States of Matter - Result Question 37
####37. A gaseous mixture was prepared by taking equal mole of $CO$ and $N_2$. If the total pressure of the mixture was found 1 atmosphere, the partial pressure of the nitrogen $(N_2)$ in the mixture is :
(a) $0.5 atm$
(b) $0.8 atm$ [2011]
(c) $0.9 atm$
(d) $1 atm$
Show Answer
Solution:
- (a) Given $n _{CO}=n _{N_2}$
$P _{CO}+P _{N_2}=1 atm$
Partial pressure of a gas $=$ mole fraction of gas $\times$ total pressure
$ \begin{aligned} \therefore P _{N_2} & =\frac{n _{N_2}}{n _{CO}+n _{N_2}} \times 1=\frac{n _{N_2}}{2 n _{N_2}} \times 1 \\ & =\frac{1}{2}=0.5 atm . \end{aligned} $
