####3. Equal moles of hydrogen and oxygen gases are placed in a container with a pin-hole through which both can escape. What fraction of the oxygen escapes in the time required for one-half of the hydrogen to escape ?

Solution:

(a) Given, $n_{H_{2}} = n_{O_{2}}$ and $t_{H_{2}} = t_{O_{2}}$

According to Graham’s law of diffusion for two different gases. $\frac{r_{H_{2}}}{r_{O_{2}}} = \frac{v_{1} / t_{1}}{v_{2} / t_{2}} \Rightarrow \sqrt{\frac{M_{O_{2}}}{M_{H_{2}}}} = \sqrt{\frac{32}{2}}$

$\frac{1 / 2}{1 / x} = \sqrt{16} = 4$

$\frac{x}{2} = 4$

$∴ x = 8$

$∴$ Fraction of $O_{2} = 1 / 8$
