Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry - Result Question 51

####51. In the reaction

$4 NH_3(g)+5 O_2(g) \to 4 NO(g)+6 H_2 O(l)$

When 1 mole of ammonia and 1 mole of $O_2$ are made to react to completion,

(a) 1.0 mole of $H_2 O$ is produced

[1998]

(b) 1.0 mole of $NO$ will be produced

(c) all the oxygen will be consumed

(d) all the ammonia will be consumed

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (c) According to Stoichiometry, they should react as follow:

$ \underset{\substack{4 \text{ moles } \\ 0.8 \text{ moles }}}{4 NH_3}+\underset{\substack{5 \text{ moles } \\ 1 \text{ mole }}}{5 O_2} \longrightarrow \underset{\substack{4 \text{ moles } \\ 0.8 \text{ moles }}}{4 NO}+\underset{\substack{6 \text{ moles } \\ 1.2 \text{ moles }}}{6 H_2 O} $

Thus, for 1 mole of $O_2$ only 0.8 moles of $NH_3$ is consumed. Hence $O_2$ is consumed completely.
