Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry - Result Question 49

####49. The mass of carbon anode consumed (giving only carbon dioxide) in the production of 270kg of aluminium metal from bauxite by the Hall process is (Atomic mass: Al=27 ) [2005]

(a) 270kg

(b) 540kg

(c) 90kg

(d) 180kg

Show Answer

Solution:

(c) 2Al2O3+3CAl+3CO2

Gram equivalent of Al2O3 g equivalent of C

Now equivalent weight of Al=273=9

Equivalent weight of C

=124=3(C0C+4O2)

No. of gram equivalent of Al=270×1039

=30×103

Hence,

No. of gram equivalent of C=30×103 Again,

No. of gram equivalent of C

= mass in gram  gram equivalent weight

30×103= mass 3

mass =90×103g=90kg
