Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry - Result Question 13
####13. Volume occupied by one molecule of water (density $=1 g cm^{-3}$ ) is :
[2008]
(a) $9.0 \times 10^{-23} cm^{3}$
(b) $6.023 \times 10^{-23} cm^{3}$
(c) $3.0 \times 10^{-23} cm^{3}$
(d) $5.5 \times 10^{-23} cm^{3}$
Show Answer
Solution:
- (c) $\therefore$ Volume occupied by 1 gram water $=1 cm^{3}$ or Volume occupied by
$\frac{6.023 \times 10^{23}}{18}$ molecules of water $=1 cm^{3}$
$ [\therefore 1 g \text{ water }=\frac{1}{18} \text{ moles of water }] $
Thus, volume occupied by 1 molecule of water $=\frac{1 \times 18}{6.023 \times 10^{23}} cm^{3}=3.0 \times 10^{-23} cm^{3}$.
i.e. the correct answer is option (c).
