Organic Chemistry Some Basic Principles and Techniques - Result Question 62
####68. Which of the following is the most stable carbocation (carbonium ion)?
[1991]
(a) $CH_3 \stackrel{+}{C} H_2$
(b) $(CH_3)_2 \stackrel{+}{C} H$
(c) $(CH_3)_3 \stackrel{+}{C}$
(d) $C_6 H_5 \stackrel{+}{C} H_2$
Show Answer
Solution:
- (c) Higher the $+I$ effect greater is stability of the species. Thus,
$(CH_3)_3 C^{+}>(CH_3)_2 \stackrel{+}{C} H>C_6 H_5 \stackrel{+}{C} H_2>CH_3 \stackrel{+}{C} H_2$
Also, primary benzyl carbocation have almost the same stability as $2^{\circ}$-alkyl carbocations.
