Organic Chemistry Some Basic Principles and Techniques - Result Question 60
####66. Lassaigne’s test for the detection of nitrogen fails in
[1994]
(a) $NH_2 CONHNH_2 \cdot HCl$
(b) $NH_2 NH_2 \cdot HCl$
(c) $NH_2 CONH_2$
(d) $C_6 H_5 NHNH_2 \cdot HCl$
Show Answer
Solution:
- (b) Hydrazine $(NH_2 NH_2)$ does not contain carbon and hence on fusion with $Na$ metal, it cannot form $NaCN$; so it does not show Lassaigne’s test for nitrogen.
This test fails in case of diazo compounds, dinitro compounds and compounds containing nitrogen in the ring.
