Organic Chemistry Some Basic Principles and Techniques - Result Question 17
####19. The first organic compound, synthesized in the laboratory, was
(a) alcohol
(b) acetic acid
(c) urea
(d) none of these
[1995]
Show Answer
Solution:
- (c) Urea is the first organic compound synthesized in the laboratory by wohler. The vital force theory suffered first death blow in 1828 when Wohler synthesized the Ist organic compound urea in the laboratory from inorganic compounds reported below :
$ NH_4 CNO \xrightarrow[\text{ rearrangement leading }]{\text{ to isomeric charge }} \underset{\text{ Urea }}{NH_2 CONH_2} $
Later on a further blow to vital force theory was given by Kolbe (1845) who prepared acetic acid, the first organic compound, in laboratory from its elements.
