Organic Chemistry Some Basic Principles and Techniques - Result Question 10
####11. The correct order regarding the electronegativity of hybrid orbitals of carbon is
[2006]
(a) $s p>s p^{2}>s p^{3}$
(b) $s p<s p^{2}>s p^{3}$
(c) $s p<s p^{2}<s p^{3}$
(d) $s p>s p^{2}<s p^{3}$
Show Answer
Solution:
- (a) Among the three given hybrid orbitals, $s p$ hybrid orbital is most electronegative.
Contribution of $s$ in $s p$ hybrid orbital is maximum $(50 %)$ so this orbital is closer to nucleus. It will have greater tendency to pull electron towards it. Hence it becomes more electronegative and $s p^{3}$ becomes least electronegative as it has only $25 %$ s-character.
