Hydrocarbons - Result Question 79
####82. Which of the following compounds reacts slower in electrophilic substitution?
[2000]
(a) $C_6 H_5 NO_2$
(b) $C_6 H_5 OH$
(c) $C_6 H_5 CH_3$
(d) $C_6 H_5 NH_2$
Show Answer
Solution:
- (a) $CH_3$ and $NH_2$ and $OH$ are electron donating groups, whereas $NO_2$ is an electron withdrawing group and leaves the benzene ring deactivated. Due to stronger electron attracting ( $-I$ effect) effect of $NO_2$ group, $C_6 H_5 NO_2$ shows least reactivity towards electrophilic substitution.
