Solution:

(b)

$\underset{Acetic acid}{C H_{3} C O O H} + \underset{Propionic acid}{C H_{3} C H_{2} C O O H}$

The glyoxal formed as an intermediate is oxidised by $H_{2} O_{2}$ to give the acids.
