####7. Consider the reactions :

$\begin{aligned} (i) & (C H_{3})_{2} C H - C H_{2} B r \overset{C_{2} H_{5} O H}{\to} \\ (C H_{3})_{2} C H - C H_{2} O C_{2} H_{5} + H B r \end{aligned}$

(ii)

$(C H_{3})_{2} C H - C H_{2} O C_{2} H_{5} + B r^{-}$

The mechanisms of reactions (i) and (ii) are respectively :

(a) $S_{N} 1$ and $S_{N} 2$

(b) $S_{N} 1$ and $S_{N} 1$

(d) $S_{N} 2$ and $S_{N} 1$

Solution:

(a) First reaction is $S_{N} 1$ reaction because $C_{2} H_{5} O H$ is used as solvent which is a weak nucleophile.

Second reaction is $S_{N} 2$ reaction because $C_{2} H_{5} O^{-}$ is a strong nucleophile.

A strong nucleophile favours the $S_{N} 2$ reaction and a weak nucleophile favours the $S_{N} 1$ reaction.
