(b) By distilling ethanol or acetone with a paste of bleaching powder (laboratory and commercial method).

$C l_{2}$ , so obtained acts as a mild oxidising as well as chlorinating agent

(i) $C H_{3} C O C H_{3} + 3 C l_{2}$ $a r r o w C C l_{3} \cdot C O \cdot C H_{3} + 3 H C l$ (Chlorination) (ii) $2 C C l_{3} \cdot C O \cdot C H_{3} + C a (O H)_{2} ⟶$

$2 C H C l_{3} + (C H_{3} C O O)_{2} C a$ (Hydrolysis)
