Equilibrium - Result Question 53

####55. A base when dissolved in water yields a solution with a hydroxyl ion concentration of $0.05 mol litre^{-1}$. The solution is

[2000]

(a) basic

(b) acidic

(c) neutral

(d) either ‘b’ or ‘c’

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (a) Given : Hydroxyl ion concentration $[OH^{-}]=0.05 mol L^{-1}$. We know that the

$ [H^{+}][OH^{-}]=1 \times 10^{-14} $

or $[H^{+}]=\frac{1 \times 10^{-14}}{0.05}=2 \times 10^{-13} mol L^{-1}$

Since $[OH^{-}]>[H^{+}]$

Therefore the solution is basic.
