Equilibrium - Result Question 28

####29. The reaction quotient $(Q)$ for the reaction

$N_2(g)+3 H_2(g) \rightarrow 2 NH_3(g)$

is given by $Q=\frac{[NH_3]^{2}}{[N_2][H_2]^{3}}$. The reaction will

proceed from right to left if

(a) $Q=0$

(b) $Q=K_c$

(c) $Q<K_c$

(d) $Q>K_c$

[2003]

where $K_c$ is the equilibrium constant

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (d) For reaction to proceed from right to left $Q>K_c$ $(\begin{matrix} \text{ backward } \\ \text{ rate }\end{matrix} )(\begin{matrix} \text{ forward } \\ \text{ rate }\end{matrix} )$ i.e the reaction will be fast in backward direction i.e $r_b>r_f$.

When $Q=K$, the system is at equilibrium $Q<K_c$, reaction shift to the right from left. $Q>K_c$, reaction proceed from right to left.
