Equilibrium - Result Question 100

####104. The compound whose aqueous solution has the highest $pH$ is

[1988]

(a) $NaCl$

(b) $NaHCO_3$

(c) $Na_2 CO_3$

(d) $NH_4 Cl$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (c) $NaCl$ is a salt of strong acid and strong base hence its aqueous solution will be neutral i.e. $pH=7 . NaHCO_3$ is an acidic salt hence $pH<$ 7. $Na_2 CO_3$ is a salt of weak acid and strong base. Hence its aqueous solution will be strongly basic i.e. $pH>7$.

$NH_4 Cl$ is salt of weak base and strong acid, hence its aqueous solution will be strongly acidic i.e. $pH<7$.
