Environmental Chemistry - Result Question 5

####5. The greenhouse effect is because of the

(a) presence of gases, which in general are strong infrared absorbers, in the atmosphere

(b) presence of $CO_2$ only in the atmosphere

(c) pressure of $O_3$ and $CH_4$ in the atmosphere

(d) $N_2 O$ and chlorofluorohydrocarbons in the atmosphere

Solution:

  1. (a) Green house gases such as $CO_2$, ozone, methane, the chlorofluoro carbon compounds and water vapour form a thick cover around the earth which prevents the IR rays emitted by the earth to escape. It gradually leads to increase in temperature of atmosphere.

Water vapour is the largest contributor to the earth’s greenhouse effect. However water vapour does not control the Earth’s temperature.
