Coordination Compounds - Result Question 63
####70. Considering $H_2 O$ as a weak field ligand, the number of unpaired electrons in $[Mn(H_2 O)_6]^{2+}$ will be (At. no. of $M n=25$ )
[2004]
(a) three
(b) five
(c) two
(d) four
Show Answer
Solution:
- (b) Since $H_2 O$ is a weak ligand, it will not cause pairing of electrons in the metal ion $Mn^{2+}$. Thus electronic configuration of the metal $(Mn^{2+})$ in the complex will be
$Mn^{2+}: 1 s^{2} 2 s^{2} p^{6} 3 s^{2} 3 p^{6} 3 d^{5}$
i.e. 5 unpaired electrons.
