Coordination Compounds - Result Question 11

####13. Which one of the following complexes is not expected to exhibit isomerism?

[2010]

(a) $[Ni(en)_3]^{2+}$

(b) $[Ni(NH_3)_4(H_2 O)_2]^{2+}$

(c) $[Pt(NH_3)_2 Cl_2]$

(d) $[Ni(NH_3)_2 Cl_2]$

Show Answer

Solution:

(d) In $[Ni(NH_3)_2 Cl_2], Ni^{2+}$ is in $s p^{3}$

hybridisation, thus tetrahedral in shape. Hence, the four ligands are not different to exhibit optical isomerism. $\therefore$ Correct choice: (d)

(ii) [Mabcd] does not have a plane of symmetry, thus it will show optical isomerism. Whereas, $[Ma_2 b_2]$ has a plane of symmetry, thus it will show optical isomerism also.

Tetrahedral complexes are symmetrical in all directions. Thus, cannot show geometrical isomerism.
