Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties - Result Question 21

####21. Amongst the elements with following electronic configurations, which one of them may have the highest ionization energy?

[2009]

(a) $Ne[3 s^{2} 3 p^{2}]$

(c) $Ne[3 s^{2} 3 p^{1}]$

(b) $Ar[3 d^{10} 4 s^{2} 4 p^{3}]$

(d) $Ne[3 s^{2} 3 p^{3}]$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (d) The smaller the atomic size, larger is the value of ionisation potential. Further the atoms having half filled or fully filled orbitals are comparatively more stable, hence more energy is required to remove the electron from such atoms.
