  1. (a) Molecular orbital configuration of $O_2$ is given as :

$ \begin{aligned} & O_2(16 e^{-}): \sigma 1 s^{2} \sigma * 1 s^{2} \sigma 2 s^{2} \sigma * 2 s^{2} \sigma 2 p_z^{2} \\ & \pi 2 p_x^{2}=\pi 2 p_y^{2} \pi * 2 p_x^{1}=\pi * 2 p_y^{1} \end{aligned} $

So, in $O_2$ molecule, there are two (2) unpaired electrons, so, it is a “paramagnetic” substance in nature.
