Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure - Result Question 12

####12. Among $LiCl, BeCl_2 BCl_3$ and $CCl_4$, the covalent bond character follows the order

[1990]

(a) $LiCl<BeCl_2>BCl_3>CCl_4$

(b) $BeCl_2<BCl_3<CCl_4<LiCl$

(c) $LiCl<BeCl_2<BCl_3<CCl_4$

(d) $LiCl>BeCl_2>BCl_3>CCl_4$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (c) As we move in period from $Li \to Be \to$ $B \to C$, the electronegativity $(EN)$ increases and hence the EN difference between the element and $Cl$ decreases and accordingly the covalent character increases. Thus $LiCl<BeCl_2<BCl_3<$ $CCl_4$ is correct.
