Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium 2 Question 10
10. Which of the following salts is the most basic in aqueous solution?
(2018 Main)
(a) $\mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{CN})_{3}$
(b) $\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COOK}$
(c) $\mathrm{FeCl}_{3}$
(d) $\mathrm{Pb}\left(\mathrm{CH}{3} \mathrm{COO}\right){2}$
Show Answer
Solution:
- Among the given salts
$\mathrm{FeCl}_{3}$ is acidic in nature i.e., have acidic solution as it is the salt of weak base and strong acid.
$\mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{CN}){3}$ and $\mathrm{Pb}\left(\mathrm{CH}{3} \mathbf{C O O}\right)_{2}$ are the salts of weak acid and weak base.
$\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COOK}$ is the salt of strong base and weak acid.
Hence, the solution of $\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COOK}$ will be most basic because of the following reaction.
$$ \mathrm{CH}{3} \mathrm{COOK}+\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O} \rightleftharpoons \underset{\text { (Weak acid) }}{\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COOH}}+\underset{\text { (Strong base) }}{\mathrm{KOH}} $$
