Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium 1 Question 49
51. At a certain temperature, equilibrium constant $\left(K_{c}\right)$ is 16 for the reaction;
$$ \mathrm{SO}{2}(g)+\mathrm{NO}{2}(g) \rightleftharpoons \mathrm{SO}_{3}(g)+\mathrm{NO}(g) $$
If we take one mole each of all the four gases in a one litre container, what would be the equilibrium concentrations of $\mathrm{NO}$ and $\mathrm{NO}_{2}$ ?
$(1987,5 M)$
Show Answer
Solution:
- $\underset{1-x}{\mathrm{SO}{2}}(g)+\underset{1-x}{\mathrm{NO}{2}}(g) \rightleftharpoons \underset{x}{\mathrm{SO}_{3}}(g)+\underset{x}{\mathrm{NO}}(g)$
$Q_{c}=1<K_{c}$, i.e. reaction proceed in forward direction to attain equilibrium.
$$ 16=\left(\frac{x}{1-x}\right)^{2} \Rightarrow x=0.80 $$
$[\mathrm{NO}]=0.80 \mathrm{M},\left[\mathrm{NO}_{2}\right]=0.20 \mathrm{M}$
