Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium 1 Question 31
32. For the reaction, $\mathrm{PCl}{5}(g) \rightleftharpoons \mathrm{PCl}{3}(g)+\mathrm{Cl}_{2}(g)$ the forward reaction at constant temperature is favoured by
(1991, 1M)
(a) introducing an inert gas at constant volume
(b) introducing chlorine gas at constant volume
(c) introducing an inert gas at constant pressure
(d) increasing the volume of the container
(e) introducing $\mathrm{PCl}_{5}$ at constant volume
Show Answer
Solution:
- If inert gas is introduced at constant pressure, volume of container will have to be increased and this will favour the forward reaction. Also adding $\mathrm{PCl}{5}(g)$ at constant volume will favour forward reaction because $\mathrm{PCl}{5}(g)$ is a reactant.
