####28. On hydrolysis of a “compound”, two compounds are obtained. One of which on treatment with sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid gives a product which does not respond to iodoform test. The second one reduces Tollen’s reagent and Fehling’s solution. The “compound” is

[NEET Kar. 2013]

(a) CH3CH2CH2CON(CH3)2

(b) CH3CH2CH2NC

(c) CH3CH2CH2CN

(d) CH3CH2CH2ON=O

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (b) Hydrolysis of propyl isocyanide (CH3CH2CH2NC) gives CH3CH2CH2NH2+ HCOOH.

On treatment with NaNO2 and HCl (I) gives CH3CH2CH2OH which does not give iodoform test. II (HCOOH) reduces Tollen’s reagent and Fehling’s solution.
