Alcohols Phenols and Ethers - Result Question 9
####9. $H_2 COH \cdot CH_2 OH$ on heating with periodic acid gives:
[2009]
(a) $2 HCOOH$
(b) $ _CHO^{\mid}$
(c) $2 \underset{H}{H}-C=O$
(d) $2 CO_2$
Show Answer
Solution:
- (c) 1,2-Diols, when treated with an aqueous solution of periodic acid give aldehyde or ketones
$ \underset{CH_2 OH}{CH_2 OH} \xrightarrow{HIO_4} CH_2 O+CH_2 O $
A $1^{\circ}$ alcohol on reaction with periodic acid gives $CH_2 O$. Since in glycol, both the $OH$ groups are primary hence, 2 molecules of $CH_2 O$ is formed as product.
