Alcohols Phenols and Ethers - Result Question 19
####19. Methanol is industrially prepared by [1992]
(a) Oxidation of $CH_4$ by steam at $900^{\circ} C$
(b) Reduction of $HCHO$ using $LiAIH_4$
(c) Reaction $HCHO$ with a solution of $NaOH$
(d) Reduction of $CO$ using $H_2$ and
$ ZnO-Cr_2 O_3 . $
Show Answer
Solution:
- (d) Water gas is mixed with half of its volume of hydrogen. The mixture is compressed to approximately $200-300$ atmospheres. It is then passed over a catalyst $(ZnO+Cr_2 O_3)$ at $300^{\circ} C$. Methyl alcohol vapours are formed which are condensed
$ \underset{\text{ Compressed gas }}{CO+2 H_2} \xrightarrow{ZnO+Cr_2 O_3} \underset{\text{ Methyl alcoho }}{CH_3 OH} $
