Transport in Plants Question 2

2. Which of the following is not a feature of active transport of solutes in plants?

[2019]

(a) Requires ATP

(b) Occurs against concentration gradient

(c) Non-selective

(d) Occurs through membranes

Show Answer

Answer : c

Hints & Solutions

(c) Active transport is uphill transport. This transport takes place against the electrochemical potential gradient and requires additional input of energy that chiefly comes from hydrolysis of ATP. It is highly selective. There are two types of active transport: primary active transport that uses adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and secondary active transport that uses an electrochemical gradient. An example of active transport in human physiology is the uptake of glucose in the intestines.
