Neural Control and Coordination Question 3

3. Myelin sheath is produced by:

(a) Astrocytes and Schwann cells

(b) Oligodendrocytes and Osteoclasts

(c) Osteoclasts and Astrocytes

(d) Schwann cells and Oligodendrocytes

Show Answer

Answer : d

Hints & Solutions

(d) Myelin sheath wrapped around the nerve axon. Oligodendrocytes are neuroglial cells which produce myelin sheath in central nervous system while Schwann cell produces myelin sheath in peripheral nervous system. The demyelinating form of Guillain-Barre syndrome destroys the protective covering of the peripheral nerves (myelin sheath), preventing the nerves from transmitting signals to the brain.
