Where Is Optic Nerve Located
The optic nerve is located at the back of each eyeball. It is the second cranial nerve and connects the eyes to the brain. It transmits action potential or electrical impulses from the retina to the visual cortex of the brain for analysis and visual perception.
The optic nerve is a part of the central nervous system which is formed by the axons of ganglion cells. During embryonic development, it is derived from the optic stalks of diencephalon. The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting all the visual information to the brain.
The point where the optic nerve passes through the optic disk and goes out of the eye is called the blind spot. The blind spot lacks rods and cones and is not sensitive to light.
