Stroma Lamellae - Meaning

Stroma lamellae is a type of plant cell wall that consists of layers of cellulose and other polysaccharides. It is found in both dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous plants, and provides structural support and protection to the cells.

The stroma of the chloroplast is a colourless fluid that surrounds the grana (stacks of thylakoid). Connecting the thylakoids of the different grana are flat membranous tubules called the stromal lamellae. Additionally, the stroma contains enzymes necessary for the synthesis of proteins and carbohydrates.

Function

Stroma lamellae connect the Thylakoids of two different grana. This helps to increase the efficiency of photosynthesis by keeping the grana at a distance, so that they do not clutter together. These lamellae are also known as Stroma Thylakoids (link). They ensure that the maximum energy from sunlight is captured in the process of photosynthesis.

The stroma lamellae also contain Photosystem I and chlorophyll.
