Stems of many plants are modified to perform various functions such as storage, protection, photosynthesis, support, propagation, and perennation. These modifications assist in better adaptation and survival.
The plumule of a germinating seed develops into a stem, which bears leaves, fruits, flowers, etc. A stem is characterized by nodes and internodes. The primary role of the stem is to provide support to other parts of the plant and to facilitate the conduction of food, water and minerals.
