Chromosome Number of Rice: Ploidy and Representation

Rice (Oryza sativa) has a small genome of approximately 0.4 Gb (the size mentioned is that of the haploid genome in each of the cases); it has the simplest of the monocotyledonous genomes. The chromosome number is 2n = 24, n = 12 chromosomes.

Rice has a small genome of approximately 430 Mb, which is composed of 12 chromosomes (2n=24). This corresponds to approximately 1500 cM (centiMorgan), with each cM representing a mean of 290 kb and meiotic recombinations of 15. However, there is a great variation in genome size between different species of rice.
