Unit 7 The P Block Elements (Intext Questions-13)

Intext Questions

7.29 Give the reason for bleaching action of $\mathrm{Cl_2}$.

Show Answer

Answer

When chlorine reacts with water, it produces nascent oxygen. This nascent oxygen then combines with the coloured substances present in the organic matter to oxide them into colourless substances.

$\mathrm{Cl_2}+\mathrm{H_2} \mathrm{O} \longrightarrow 2 \mathrm{HCl}+[\mathrm{O}]$

Coloured substances $+[O]$ Oxidized colourless substance

7.30 Name two poisonous gases which can be prepared from chlorine gas.

Show Answer
