An artillery piece of mass $M _1$ fires a shell of mass $M _2$ horizontally. Instantaneously after the firing, the ratio of kinetic energy of the artillery and that of the shell is :

(1) $M _1 /\left(M _1+M _2\right)$

(2) $\frac{M _2}{M _1}$

(3) $M _2 /\left(M _1+M _2\right)$

(4) $\frac{M _1}{M _2}$

Solution:

$\left|\overrightarrow{p _1}\right|=\left|\overrightarrow{p _2}\right|$

$KE=\frac{p^{2}}{2 M} ; p$ same

$KE \propto \frac{1}{m}$

$\frac{KE _1}{KE _2}=\frac{p^{2} / 2 M _1}{p^{2} / 2 M _2}=\frac{M _2}{M _1}$
